Kodi is the open-source media centre that turns any device into a do-anything entertainment hub — and its built-in PVR IPTV Simple Client add-on lets you load any M3U playlist or Xtream Codes login, turning Kodi into a fully-featured IPTV player with EPG, channel groups, and recording. UK users running Kodi tend to be either: (1) tinkerers who want maximum control over the player UI, (2) Windows or Linux desktop users where Kodi is the most polished IPTV option, or (3) households with custom media collections who want IPTV inside the same browse-and-play interface as their personal video library. This guide installs Kodi on Firestick, Android and Windows, walks through the PVR IPTV Simple Client configuration, and explains the trade-offs vs purpose-built players like IPTV Smarters Pro.
What is Kodi PVR IPTV Simple Client?
Kodi (formerly XBMC) is a free open-source media-centre application originally developed for the original Xbox in the early 2000s. Today it runs on every major platform — Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, Android TV, Firestick (via sideload), Raspberry Pi. It is best known as a personal media library player but it also includes a PVR (Personal Video Recorder) framework that supports IPTV through add-ons.
PVR IPTV Simple Client is the official Kodi add-on for IPTV. It accepts any M3U URL or Xtream Codes credentials and integrates the channel list, EPG and recording into Kodi's standard PVR interface. It is bundled with Kodi by default — you enable it through Kodi's add-on browser, no third-party installation required.

Install Kodi on UK Firestick
Kodi is not in the Amazon App Store. Sideload via Downloader — same routine as IPTV Smarters Pro and TiviMate.
- Enable Apps from Unknown Sources: Firestick Settings → My Fire TV → Developer Options.
- Install the Downloader app from the Amazon App Store.
- Open Downloader, type
https://kodi.tv/download, navigate to the Android ARM 64-bit build.
- Download the APK (around 80 MB) and install it.
- Open Kodi from the Firestick app drawer. The first launch shows the Estuary skin (default).
Install Kodi on Windows / Android / NVIDIA Shield
- Windows: download the installer from kodi.tv → run it. Adds Kodi to Start Menu.
- Android TV / Box / NVIDIA Shield: install Kodi from the Google Play Store directly — no sideload needed.
- macOS: download the .dmg from kodi.tv → drag to Applications.
Configure PVR IPTV Simple Client with our service
- Open Kodi. Go to Add-ons → My Add-ons → PVR Clients → PVR IPTV Simple Client.
- If it shows "Disabled", click Enable.
- Click Configure.
- Under the General tab → Location → Remote Path (Internet address).
- Paste the M3U URL we sent you with your trial. Save.
- Switch to the EPG Settings tab → XMLTV URL → leave blank if our M3U includes embedded EPG (it does), or paste a separate XMLTV URL.
- Save and close. Kodi prompts to restart the add-on — click Yes.
- Go back to the Kodi home screen. The TV menu now appears in the main navigation.
- Click TV → Channels. Channel list and EPG load over 1–3 minutes for our 92,000-channel feed.
Kodi vs IPTV Smarters Pro — when to pick which
Both run on Firestick. Both load the same IPTV credentials. The differences:
| Feature | Kodi + PVR IPTV | IPTV Smarters Pro |
| UI polish | Customisable but cluttered by default | Cleaner out of the box |
| Setup complexity | Higher (PVR add-on config) | Lower (one-screen Xtream login) |
| Personal media library integration | Yes (Kodi's strength) | No |
| Add-ons / extensibility | Hundreds of add-ons | None |
| EPG quality | Good but slower than TiviMate | Good |
| Recording | Yes (built-in PVR) | No |
| Best for | Tinkerers + media collectors | IPTV-only households |
For pure IPTV viewing, IPTV Smarters Pro is faster to set up and slightly cleaner day-to-day. For households that want IPTV combined with a personal media library, plus the flexibility of Kodi's add-on ecosystem, Kodi is the right choice.

Common Kodi IPTV problems and fixes
PVR IPTV Simple Client says "Connection lost" repeatedly
Usually the M3U URL has an issue — either the credentials expired or there is a temporary server hiccup. Re-check the M3U URL exactly matches what we sent. If still failing, force-quit Kodi and reopen.
EPG missing for many channels
Our M3U includes embedded EPG by default. If most channels show no EPG in Kodi, the embedded EPG was disabled in PVR IPTV Simple Client config. Re-open the add-on configuration → EPG Settings → set EPG provided by M3U to Yes. Restart the add-on.
Kodi crashes on Firestick after PVR config
Older Firesticks (pre-4K Max) sometimes choke on the larger 92,000-channel M3U file in Kodi. Workarounds: (1) edit the M3U locally to keep only the channels you watch (much smaller file), or (2) upgrade to a Firestick 4K Max which has the RAM headroom. Kodi runs perfectly on NVIDIA Shield, Windows or any modern Android Box.
Kodi IPTV UK FAQ
Is Kodi legal in the UK?
Yes — Kodi is open-source software, completely legal to download and use. Kodi the application has the same legal status as VLC. The legality issues sometimes associated with "Kodi boxes" come from third-party add-ons that scrape pirated content, which is unrelated to the official Kodi project itself. Using Kodi with PVR IPTV Simple Client and a licensed sport IPTV subscription is fully legal.
Will Kodi PVR work with Xtream Codes credentials instead of M3U?
Yes — install the third-party PVR IPTV Xtream Codes add-on (available via Kodi's repository) for native Xtream Codes API support, including VOD library integration. PVR IPTV Simple Client only handles M3U; the Xtream version handles both.
Can Kodi record live sport IPTV in the UK?
Yes — PVR IPTV Simple Client supports DVR recording. Configure a recording path in the add-on settings, then schedule recordings from Kodi's PVR EPG. Recordings save as MP4 to the chosen path.
Does Kodi work in 4K HDR for IPTV?
Yes — on devices with 4K HDR hardware support (NVIDIA Shield, Firestick 4K Max, Windows PC with discrete GPU). Kodi has solid HDR pipeline support; the bottleneck is usually the device hardware rather than Kodi itself.
Why use Kodi instead of IPTV Smarters Pro?
Kodi is the right choice if you want: (1) personal media library integrated with IPTV, (2) deep customisation of the UI, (3) add-on extensibility (PVR enhancements, weather widgets, podcast integration), or (4) a desktop / Linux IPTV setup where IPTV Smarters Pro is less mature.
